The Department of Buildings (DOB) allows for construction Monday to Friday between 7 AM and 6 PM. Owners of one- and two-family homes may make alterations or repairs on Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM if the home is more than 300 feet from a house of worship.

Construction done without an approved variance on weekends or on weekdays before 7 AM or after 6 PM is not allowed.

You can report unauthorized after hours building construction taking place during these times.

Include in your report:

• The type of work being done

• The work hours

• If a permit is posted

Workers and concerned observers can report a building construction site that is unsafe for construction workers. Anyone filing a report can choose to remain anonymous.

• The type of work being done

• The worker's complaint about the construction work

You can report noise from construction, including jackhammering and construction activity during, before, or after hours.

Residential Construction is allowed between 7 AM and 6 PM on weekdays. Alterations or repairs to existing one-family or two-family, owner-occupied dwellings, convents or rectories may also be performed on Saturdays and Sundays between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Commercial, Street, and Highway Construction is allowed on weekdays between 7 AM and 6 PM. However, emergency work necessary for public safety, or work that cannot be performed during normal work hours may occur after hours or on weekends.

Work may take place at other times only if the site has a construction variance from the City.

You can report noise even if a site has a variance.

Report noise from:

• Construction during hours.

• Jackhammer during hours.

• Construction or jackhammer before or after hours.

Picture or Video Attachments

Picture or video attachments may be used for informational purposes only. A condition must be observed in person by a DEP inspector for a summons or Commissioner's order to be issued.

Active construction sites and repair activity must allow enough room for sidewalk and street traffic to pass.

You can report:

• Sidewalks or streets that are blocked by construction equipment, barriers, or activity.

• Items left behind after construction was completed.

• Large dumpsters with construction debris blocking the street, sidewalk, crosswalk, or bus stop
